Anabolic and Androgenic Steroids Use in Bodybuilding

What are anabolic steroids and why so many athletes and bodybuilders take them?

Anabolic steroids are performance enhancing and muscle building drugs. They are a synthetic form of the chemical testosterone that is normally found in the body. By taking steroid drugs, a person's testosterone level can be raised up to a hundred times more than the usual amount. As a result the increase in testosterone increases anabolic activity, which results in greater muscle bulk and overall sensation of well being and strength. These compounds also increases protein synthesis and enhanced secondary sexual characteristics in males. Once in the blood, anabolic steroids bind to androgen receptor sites by entering the cell and altering its function. Improved conversion of protein to muscle happens concomitantly with increased nitrogen retention or slightly thereafter. The retention of nitrogen indicates that muscle tissue is being deposited. Anabolic steroids reduce the amount of cortisol (a catabolic hormone) from entering muscle tissue. Less cortisol also means aids in muscle growth.

All anabolic steroids are both anabolic and androgenic. Anabolic steroids when combined with permanent quality training and a diet high in calories, especially protein will cause an increase in protein synthesis which in turn will provide protein molecules used by the body to increase the size and strength of the skeletal muscles- the major muscle group of the body. The obvious goal of bodybuilders and athletes is muscular hypertrophy or growth and steroidal compounds can accelerate this process.

Orally taken steroids are well absorbed into the stomach and they are excreted fairly rapidly. The negative side of taking oral steroids is that they are slightly more toxic than injected steroids. They are highly potent, which makes the risk of overdosing very high. Injectable steroids are less toxic to the liver and are less potent than oral steroids on an equal dosage basis. Injected steroids have a longer half- life, which makes them last longer. That fact also allows them to be detected in drug tests for a longer period of time. After the use of Testosterone derivates in bodybuilding cycles it is crucial to restore normal body’s functions back. Anti-estrogens are essential for all athletes and bodybuilders in avoiding the estrogen effects, in holding the excess water, in recovering Hypothalamic Pituitary Testicular Axis and adjusting the natural testosterone production to the normal level, as well as in combating other effects provoked by the usage of steroids.
